Uncertainty Surrounds VCU's Use of CarMax Park
The Richmond Flying Squirrels announced on January 9 that negotiations with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) regarding the use of the upcoming CarMax Park have concluded without resolution. Since 2010, VCU and the Flying Squirrels have shared The Diamond, a historic baseball stadium in Richmond that has been home to VCU baseball since 1985. The Diamond has provided a significant home-field advantage, with VCU boasting an impressive record there.
CarMax Park is set to replace The Diamond in September 2024, but VCU has yet to finalize a contract outlining the terms of its use. Negotiations have focused on rental fees and the sale of the adjacent Sports Backers Stadium, which VCU owns. Although a memo of understanding was signed by city officials, VCU President Michael Rao and Richmond Mayor Danny Avula expressed optimism about resolving outstanding issues. If an agreement is not reached, VCU may need to find alternative arrangements for its season, as it remains unclear whether they will be able to continue playing at The Diamond.
